Arsenal are stepping up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez as the transfer deadline approaches. The Gunners are prepared to pay up to £128 million which would obliterate the British transfer record.
However, the club will only move forward if the Argentina forward signals that he wants to move to north London.
Hostile atmosphere in Madrid
Alvarez made his appearance off the bench for Atletico on Sunday against Villarreal but the afternoon ended in turmoil. Amid intense transfer speculation, he was heavily booed by home supporters and escorted away from the pitch.
Manager Diego Simeone explained, “People at the club told me that the club decided he shouldn’t go near the stands or the fans.”
The Berta advantage and rival block
Two crucial factors are keeping Arsenal’s hopes high. First, sporting director Andrea Berta maintains a close relationship with Atlético CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin. Second, Atletico Madrid strongly prefer selling abroad refusing to deal with rivals Barcelona.
Alvarez’s camp is reportedly pushing him to consider Arsenal as his top destination.
Outgoings to fund the mega-deal
To facilitate a move, Arsenal is actively working on squad departures. Winger Gabriel Martinelli is subject to interest from Al Hilal, with the Gunners holding out for £60 million. The potential sale would free up necessary funds and roster space for Alvarez before the transfer window closes.
