Queen Mary has championed a major initiative for women.
On Tuesday, August 25, the Queen of Denmark stepped out solo for a major engagement, during which she met with global partners of a key initiative in her role as the patron and highlighted fresh progress in the fight against a major health crisis.
Taking to Instagram, the Danish Royal Family posted a carousel of photos from the Queen’s latest outing, sharing that she participated in a status meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to receive update on a key initiative to reduce maternal mortality.
Mary, who has been following global developments in maternal mortality for nearly two decades, is the patron of “The 10 Million Safer Births Initiative,” which aims to fight against maternal deaths and improve access to safer childbirth for millions of women across sub-Saharan Africa.
“Together with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Maternity Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an initiative was launched a few years ago with the aim of improving the quality of the help that midwives and health workers provide to reduce maternal mortality,” shared Amalienborg Palace.
The Royals continued, “The Queen has been the patron of the initiative from the beginning. The result was “The 10 Million Safer Births Initiative”, which The Queen launched last year in Nigeria. The initiative is based on a concrete and ambitious goal of giving up to 10 million women access to safer childbirth by the end of 2030 across sub-Saharan Africa, and is supported by the Danish government and the Gates Foundation.”
They noted, “Today, The Queen participated in a status meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the partners presented positive results from the first three intervention countries: Ethiopia, Tanzania and Nigeria.”
It was also shared that every two minutes, a woman dies from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth, and 70 percent of deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.
