Billionaire sports mogul Stan Kroenke has officially agreed to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels through Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE).

The historic acquisition is valued at approximately $4 billion marking the highest purchase price for a franchise in Major League Baseball history.

End of Arte Moreno’s 23-year ownership

The deal closes out a turbulent 23-year reign under current owner Arte Moreno, who bought the franchise in 2003 shortly after its sole World Series victory.

Despite boasting superstar talents like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani over the years, the Angels struggled with decade-long playoff droughts and roster mismanagement triggering widespread fan protests calling for a leadership change.

Building a six-league empire

By adding Major League Baseball to his portfolio, Kroenke cements an unprecedented presence across professional sports. KSE already owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, NBA’s Denver Nuggets, NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, MLS’s Colorado Rapids and Premier League giant Arsenal.

The purchase reinforces Kroenke’s dominant footprint in Southern California anchoring his baseball franchise alongside the Rams and his multi-billion-dollar SoFi Stadium development in Inglewood.

Approval and what lies ahead

The transaction is expected to officially close in the first quarter of 2027, pending formal approval from Major League Baseball and its team owners.

For Angels fans, Kroenke’s track record of bringing championships to the Rams, Nuggets and Avalanche offers renewed hope for rebuilding a winning culture in Anaheim.
