King Haakon and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra have officially kicked off their royal duties.
The Norwegian Royal Family took to their official Instagram account on Friday, September 4, to share a major update, reporting that the new monarch, along with the heiress to the throne, undertook his first official royal engagement after taking the oath.
After formally becoming the King of Norway, Haakon met with political, defense and religious representatives, who visited the Palace to express their condolences after the passing of his father, King Harald V.
King Harald V, who reigned the country from 1991 until his death, passed away at the age of 89 on August 28, 2026, following a battle with haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood disorder.
“Today, King Haakon and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra received representatives of the Sami Parliament, the Chief of Defence and representatives of the Cooperation Council for Religious and Belief Communities in condolence audiences at the Royal Palace,” shared the Royal Palace.
They added, “They came to express their condolences following the passing of King Harald.”
In the post, the Royals also posted a three-slide gallery, showing photos from King Haakon VIII and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s meeting with the representatives.
King Haakon VIII takes the oath
King Haakon VIII officially assumed his role as Norway’s monarch on Tuesday, September 1, by pledging an oath of allegiance to the country’s Constitution.
"I promise and swear that I will govern the Kingdom of Norway in according with its constitution and laws, so help me god, the almighty and omniscient," the 53-year-old said.
He also adopted the motto “All for Norway,” which dates back to his great-grandfather.
King Harald V death
On Friday, August 28, the Royal Palace in Oslo announced a heartbreaking news, sharing that King Harald V passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. local time at the National Hospital in Oslo.
