Ahead of a high-stakes FIBA Women’s World Cup semifinal clash between Spain and Team USA, Spanish center Megan DiLeo weighed in on her former college teammate Caitlin Clark’s reserve role.
DiLeo dismisses Spanish advantage
Speaking to reporters after Spain’s 89-66 quarterfinal victory over Australia, DiLeo rejected the notion that Clark coming off the bench gives Spain an edge.
“I don’t think so,” DiLeo said when asked if Team USA’s lineup decision favors Spain. “She’s just a great player. It doesn’t really matter when she goes into the game – she’s going to make a good impact. We just have to be ready for her and the rest of the roster.”
Hawkeye reunion on the world stage
The upcoming matchup features a narrative overlap, as both stars previously played for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
DiLeo (formerly Gustafson) was the 2019 National Player of the Year at Iowa, while Clark became the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer during her standout collegiate career.
Dominant form heading into the semifinals
Both players enter the semifinal off strong quarterfinal performances. DiLeo delivered a game-high 16 points and two rebounds to push Spain past Australia.
Meanwhile, Clark recorded 10 points and 9 assists off the bench in Team USA’s 108-56 blowout win against Hungary.
Team USA remains unbeaten as they aim for a fifth consecutive World Cup gold medal, while Spain seeks to reach its first tournament final since 2014. The semifinal showdown between the two powerhouse nations takes place on Saturday.
