Bill Gates has officially issued a warning that artificial intelligence (AI) could aggravate inequality unless technology companies and governments ensure its benefits reach underserved communities.
The Gates Foundation announced a $1 billion commitment over the next two years to support AI-focused projects in healthcare, education, agriculture and local-language technology.
AI could widen inequalityBill Gates raised concerns regarding the fledgling field of AI in the foundation’s annual Goalkeepers report that tracks progress toward the United Nations’ development goals for 2030.
Previously, he has described AI as having the possibility to become either a significant feature for equality or a serious source of injustice.
Moreover, he has also addressed risks including fraud, misinformation, cyberattacks, surveillance, and other harmful uses of the technology.
Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, stated AI could be a revolutionizing tool during a period of global challenges; however, its benefits must be made more widely available.
Focus on underpriviledged communities
Nearly $100 million of the new funding will support datasets and AI systems, which is particularly designed for languages spoken by underserved communities across Africa.
The foundation is also preparing to work with major technology firms. Google and Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab have supported efforts to strengthen AI frameworks and underrepresented languages.
OpenAI has committed $50 million alongside the foundation to train health workers in Rwanda, while Anthropic is working on vaccine development and enhancing AI data related to local crops.
Funding for health, education and farmingThe foundation plans to allocate around $400 million to education, including AI tools that can help teachers adapt lesson plans to students’ needs.
Another $400 million will support healthcare projects, including tools designed to assist physicians detect overlooked symptoms. Around $100 million will go toward agriculture, including AI-powered advice on weather, pests and fertilizer use.
