Duncan Sheik has been hospitalized in “critical but stable condition,” just weeks before two major Off-Broadway musicals featuring his work are set to begin.
The singer-songwriter's family issued a statement on his health status Wednesday evening, but did not share specifics surrounding what caused Sheik's hospitalization.
"We would like to share an update with Duncan's fans and the public," a statement on the composer's Instagram read.
It noted, "Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time."
The statement added: "We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support."
Soon after the statement went public, the fans took the comment section to express their concerns on Sheik’s deteriorating health.
One fan noted, Duncan we love you so much. All the love in the world to you and your family.”
Another commented, “My heart and prayers are with you, Duncan!”
The third stated, “You got this dude! Your music has saved me more than once.”
Duncan Sheik career
The news comes as Sheik’s new musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen prepares for its Off-Broadway run later this month, while a revival of Spring Awakening is scheduled to open in November.
The 2026 Off-Broadway revival is being directed by Danya Taymor, with previews starting at Studio Seaview in November ahead of its December 17 opening.
The new musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen is scheduled to start previews Sept. 25 at The Night Egg at the Culture Club, with Sophia Anne Caruso leading the cast.
Apart from his work on Broadway, Sheik is best known for his 1996 hit song, Barely Breathing.
This song earned Sheik a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
He later joined theater, where he wrote the music alongside co-creator Steven Sater's lyrics for Spring Awakening.
Sheik took home two Tony Awards for Spring Awakening, winning Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
The musical ran for 859 performances on Broadway between 2006 and 2009 before being revived by Deaf West Theatre in 2015 under director Michael Arden.
