Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., joining hands to form a human chain.
The “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” demonstration was organized to express alarm over the historic facility’s future and to block potential structural changes.
Legal disputes and threats of demolition
The rally follows growing public anger over the administration’s handling of the national cultural landmark. After a federal judge blocked efforts to add President Donald Trump’s name to the building’s exterior, the center’s board voted to shut down the complex indefinitely, citing repairs.
Tensions escalated when photos emerged showing the president holding a placard depicting potential demolition plans. In response, US District Judge Christopher Cooper ordered the administration to provide at least 30 days’ advance notice before taking any action toward demolishing the facility.
Demonstrators vow to protect cultural landmark
Protesters carried signs reading “Hands Off the Arts” and “Keep Your Hands Off Our Kennedy Center,” chanting through the streets of Foggy Bottom.
Local organizers emphasized that the venue serves as crucial space for the performing arts community and pledged to continue public demonstrations.
White House response
Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump defended his position stating that the facility was facing significant financial losses and required major structural restoration.
While asserting that this administration could easily save the venue, he maintained that proper recognition should be granted for federal intervention efforts.
