The game reached maximum drama in the extra period. Kansas City initially believed they had clinched the game when Harrison Butker drilled a 31-yard field goal and the defense appeared to recover a fumble on the subsequent Indianapolis drive.
However, replay officials overturned the call, ruling receiver Laquon Treadwell down by contact. Indianapolis capitalized on the reprieve, with Spencer Shrader kicking a 38-yard field goal to tie the game at 30-30.
Offensive stars deliver in clutch finish
Refusing to let the game slip away, Mahomes took control with 3:11 remaining in overtime. He leaned on running back Kenneth Walker III, who rushed for 117 yards on the night, to move the offense past midfield.
The victory was complemented by a historic milestone for star tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce caught nine passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, officially passing Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk for the most career yards after the catch in NFL history.
