New York Yankees slugger Ben Rice has officially surpassed manager Aaron Boone’s bold spring training prediction. Ahead of the season, Boone set a high bar for the young power hitter, playfully challenging him to hit 39 home runs.
Rice met that challenge head-on and went one step further. During a multi-homer performance against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, Rice crushed his 40th and 41st home runs of the year, sailing right past his manager’s pre-season expectation.
A breakout power season
The milestone caps off a remarkable breakout campaign for the 27-year-old first baseman. After entering the year looking to secure a permanent middle-of-the-order role, Rice quickly established himself as one of the American League’s most potent bats.
Despite experiencing a brief mid-season slump, he rebounded quickly in September to drive the offense forward. Addressing Boone’s 39-homer mark, Rice noted with a smile that his manager always tries to “short” him by a couple of homers just to push him to reach greater heights.
