Disney+ has issued an apology to football fans after a surprise commercial break cut off live coverage during the second half of Arsenal’s opening UEFA Women’s Champions League fixture.

Viewers tuning into the match against Danish side KB Koge were left frustrated when roughly three minutes of play were suddenly replaced by advertisement reels or a fallback screen reading “commercial break in progress.”

The outage occurred with roughly 15 minutes left in the game.

Disney responds to fan backlash

Following heavy criticism across social media platforms, the streaming service clarified that the disruption was unintentional and caused by a technical glitch rather than a planned commercial interruption.

“This was not an intended ad break and we understand the frustration this disruption caused to our customers watching the game,” a broadcaster spokesperson stated.

Disney confirmed that technical steps are being implemented to prevent similar issues in future broadcasts.

Broadcaster criticism and production debuts

No goals were missed during the brief outage, as Mariona Caldentey eventually secured Arsenal’s 1-0 victory with a stoppage-time penalty. However, the ad error was not the only point of contention for fans during the broadcast, which is produced for Disney+ by ESPN.

Viewers also voiced mixed reactions to Disney’s new studio companion show, The Hangout, which debuted during the match. Featuring host Alex Scott alongside former England forward Lianne Sanderson, the quirky setup included a rotating studio floor, a vegetable platter and an appearance by a dog named Barley Boy.

While designed as a lighthearted match-day experience, some supporters labeled the presentation gimmicky. Broadcasters indicated they will continue taking viewer feedback into account as the season progresses.
