China's legendary musician, Lui Huan, has breathed his last. He was 63.
The voice behind the Beijing 2008 Olympic theme song, You and Me, tragically passed away at the University of International Business and Economics.
According to media reports, the University issued a sombre obituary in which they announced that Huan died on Friday, September 25th, 2026.
However, the cause of his death is yet to be revealed by the institute, where he joined as a teacher and associate professor at the Art Teaching‑Research Section in July 1991 and retired in September 2023.
How Liu Huan died?
"Erudite in Chinese and Western music and guided by high moral standards as an educator, he dedicated his life to music and contributed greatly to higher education music education," the tearful note read.
The statement continued, "His death is a major loss for the university and China's music circle."
Liu Huan was born in Tianjin in August 1963.
He studied French literature at the Beijing Institute of International Relations and participated in both English and French song competitions for universities in the capital.
Lui Huan's career highlights
In 1986, he participated in recording CCTV's Movie World weekend gala, singing English and French songs such as Country Rock and My Way, as well as the theme songs for the movies Tehran 43 and The Wild Geese.
Additionally, the deceased musician once served as a mentor on The Voice of China; in 2014.
He also initiated and planned the music reality show Sing My Song and served as a mentor in 2019.
Later, he donated funds in his personal capacity to jointly establish the Liu Huan Original Music Charity Fund with the Hunan Broadcasting Film and Television Group (TV) Mango V Foundation.
Liu Huan was last seen at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival's long street banquet in October last year, where he made a rare public appearance in years.
So far, the late artist's family has not revealed the details of his mass funeral.
