Justin Bieber has been open about his experience with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which temporarily left one side of his face partially paralyzed and forced him to put his career on hold.
In June 2022, the Peaches singer took to his Instagram account to share with fans that he is experiencing facial paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
He shared the update after abruptly canceling a string of shows on his Justice World Tour.
After resuming his tour in July, Bieber announced this week that he will be taking another break to focus on his health. “I realized that I need to make my health the priority right now,” Bieber wrote on Instagram, referencing the toll of live performances and the exhaustion he’d felt after a recent show in Brazil. “So I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being. I’m going to be ok, but I need time to rest and get better.”
What is Ramsay Hunt syndrome?
It is a rare neurological disorder caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which can reactivate years after causing chickenpox or shingles.
It can lead to facial paralysis, vertigo and hearing loss, though most people recover fully within months.
A source told PEOPLE that Bieber was “very worried” about potential long-term effects but remained hopeful for a full recovery.

Bieber underwent dedicated facial exercises and physical therapy to help stimulate nerve regeneration.
In March 2023, the Swag singer offered fans a glimpse of his recovery, sharing an Instagram video in which he flashed a wide, symmetrical smile.
Although Bieber regained full facial mobility, medical experts say around 30% to 40% of Ramsay Hunt syndrome patients may experience lasting effects, including mild facial asymmetry or synkinesis, which causes involuntary movements.
Since his recovery, Bieber has taken a more measured approach to work and wellbeing, stepping back from demanding schedules while placing greater emphasis on family life and personal health.
He has also continued making music with a more personal creative outlook.
