Manchester City face the biggest crisis in their modern history after an independent commission found them guilty of serious financial rule breaches spanning nine seasons.
The Premier League confirmed the club broke rules between 2009 and 2018 through “sham” commercial contracts that hid more than £900 million in funding from their Abu Dhabi owners.
City inflated income and understated costs while also failing to fully cooperate with the investigation.
What happened and what comes next
City won three Premier League titles (2011-12, 2013-14 and 2017-18), one FA Cup and three League Cups during the period under investigation. Sanctions have not been decided.
An independent panel will hold a separate hearing to decide punishment. Options range from a heavy points deduction and huge fine to possible expulsion from the Premier League.
Stripping past titles remains possible under the rules, though sources say there is little appetite inside the league for that step.
City strongly deny any wrongdoing. Club officials call the findings “unsafe” and say they contain clear errors. They have until 2 October 2026 to file an appeal and have promised to fight the case relentlessly.
Famous clubs that lost titles before
Manchester City would not be the first big club to lose silverware retrospectively. In 2006 Juventus were stripped of two Serie A titles (2004-05 and 2005-06) after the Calciopoli referee scandal. The club was also relegated to Serie B. One title was left vacant; the other went to Inter Milan.
In France, Marseille lost their 1992-93 Ligue 1 title after a match-fixing scandal involving club president Bernard Tapie. They kept the Champions League trophy they won the same season but were relegated.
Rival clubs watch closely
If City’s titles were removed, Manchester United (runners-up in 2011-12 and 2017-18) and Liverpool (2013-14) would stand to gain. Other clubs are already exploring legal action for compensation.
For now, City remain Premier League leaders but the cloud over their past successes grows darker by the day. The next few months will decide whether they join Juventus and Marseille on the list of title-stripped champions.
