Gigi Hadid is managing her life with Hashimoto disease!

America’s top-paid model was diagnosed with Hashimoto on December 7th, 2016, during a panel for Reebok's # PerfectNever campaign in New York City.

At the time of her announcement, she noted that she had already been managing the autoimmune condition and taking medication for it for two years.

Later, on February 11th, 2018, she went into further detail about her diagnosis in a widely shared Twitter thread to defend herself against online body shamers criticising her weight changes.

Now, after years of dealing with the illness, the mom of one addressed the subject of her weight changing; she said, "those of u (sic) who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that."

If you aren’t familiar, the autoimmune disease attacks the thyroid gland, which can lead to symptoms including fluctuations in weight, fatigue, muscle aches and depression.

"I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesn’t suit ur (sic) ‘beauty’ expectation, shouldn’t have to," she added.

What is Hashimoto?

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition where your immune system attacks your thyroid gland at the base of your neck.

Over time, the gland struggles to make enough hormones, which leads to hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid).

Treatment usually involves taking a daily thyroid hormone replacement pill, like levothyroxine, to restore normal body function.

Apart from Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid is also struggling with a rare chronic illness known as Lyme disease, a medical condition her mother and brother also suffer from.

Bella was diagnosed around 2012 when she was 16 years old.

Her mother, Yolanda and her brother, Anwar, also have the same diagnosis.
