Novak Djokovic captured his seventh China Open title in Beijing this week, extending his unbelievable streak at the event to 34-0.

The 39-year-old Serbian defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the final after the Australian retired early in the second set while trailing 7-6(3), 0-1. It marked Djokovic’s first title of the 2026 season and the 102nd of his career.

The win came after a strong run that included victories over three top-10 players in just three days, giving the 24-time Grand Slam champion a major confidence boost following a difficult period.

The message that still guides him

Speaking to reporters after the final, Djokovic opened up about what continues to motivate him at this stage of his career. He revealed a lasting lesson from his late friend, NBA legend Kobe Bryant.

“People come from across China or the world to watch you maybe one time in their life. Kobe Bryant used to say that,” Djokovic explained.

“He would always want to play because there probably is always at least one or more fans that are coming, maybe the only time to see you perform. You’re not just playing for yourself; you’re playing for people, for the sport. There’s much more that you carry if you’re a star player.”

Playing with purpose

Djokovic said he believes tennis is what he was destined to do. “I really believe that God has given me this opportunity and talent to be who I am and to be where I am. I’m grateful. I’m trying to fulfill my mission and potential as much as possible.”

He also praised Chinese fans as some of the most passionate in the world, noting the full stadiums and warm support after an 11-year absence from Beijing. The victory proved he can still compete at the highest level and arrives at a key moment as he looks ahead in the season.
