Cristiano Ronaldo has finally broken his silence after walking out on Portugal’s national team training camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League clash.
The superstar forward sparked widespread viral memes and social media debate after storming off following a bench role against Norway.
Broken promises and walkout
In an extensive official statement, the 41-year-old national team captain took responsibility for his abrupt departure while taking aim at head coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo accused Jesus of twice breaking his word, revealing that an agreement was made regarding his playing role and a subsequent public explanation. After sitting as an unused substitute against Norway and being informed he would not start against Denmark, Ronaldo chose to leave the squad.
“I owe an apology to my national team teammates. The responsibility is mine alone,” Ronaldo stated. “I apologize to the Portuguese people once again but a broken word had, for me, a defining impact.”
Accepting punishment and looking forward
Despite the friction, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner made it clear that he is not retiring from international football. He expressed full willingness to accept any disciplinary sanction imposed by the federation for his walkout, acknowledging that as captain, his actions carry higher accountability.
Once any suspension is served, Ronaldo remains committed to wearing the captain’s armband for Portugal once again.
