US President Donald Trump has announced plans for extensive oil, gas and mineral exploration in Greenland, renewing attention on the strategically essential Arctic island and its natural resources.
Taking to Truth Social post on Wednesday, October 14, Trump stated “massive” exploration activities were set to kick off in what he called “our new and beautiful Greenland.”
He further claimed that the island could entail some quantities of easily available oil and emphasised its significance to US and European security.
Trump argued that Greenland's geographical position could help American defence to improve their capabilities by offering a strategic location for identifying and intercepting possible threats, including drones and missiles.
The announcement comes amid Trump's continued interest in Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The island has attracted international attention due to its mineral resources, Arctic location and possible strategic significance amid significantly increasing competition in the region.
In September, an agreement involving the United States, Denmark and Greenland paved the way for expanded American military operations.
The reported plans include two additional military bases and the deployment of Trump's proposed Golden Dome missile defence system.
However, the agreement is currently being discussed in Greenland's parliament before the final vote. Opposition lawmakers have raised concerns regarding the lack of guaranteed financial compensation despite the extensive rights that Washington could receive under the arrangement.
Greenland's natural resources have long attracted interest from governments and businesses, although exploration and extraction in the Arctic can face significant environmental, logistical and financial challenges.
