San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans left Monday night’s game against the Washington Commanders with an Achilles injury and was ruled out for the rest of the contest.

Evans was already dealing with soreness in his Achilles and broken ribs. He missed all practice during the week but was active for the game at Levi’s Stadium.

What happened on the field

Late in the second quarter, Evans caught a 16-yard pass from Brock Purdy. After the play, he stayed down, stretched his right leg and needed help from medical staff to walk slowly to the locker room. Cameras showed him favoring the leg and pointing to his Achilles in the tunnel.

The team first listed him as questionable to return. Early in the third quarter they upgraded the designation to out. Evans finished with three catches for 94 yards before exiting.

Thin receiving group takes another hit

Without Evans, the 49ers had limited options at wide receiver. Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Malik Turner (elevated from practice squad) were the main available players. Several other receivers including Deebo Samuel (hamstring) and Christian Kirk (calf) were already sidelined.

Nick Bosa was also inactive with a calf injury, adding to the team’s overall injury concerns.

Looking ahead

Evans has played through multiple issues this season after signing with the 49ers in free agency. Early reports indicate the Achilles is intact but the team is expected to be cautious. Some sources suggest he could miss time through the Week 8 bye with a possible return around Week 9.

The 49ers managed a win despite the setback but the depth at receiver remains a major question heading into the rest of the schedule. Fans and fantasy managers will watch closely for the next official update on Evans’ recovery.
