The Weeknd caught fans off guard by debuting a new song titled Hong Kong during the opening night of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour at Kai Tak Stadium.
'Hong Kong' includes Faye Wong's 'Seasonal Wind'
On Saturday, October 24, the singer dropped the song written specifically for the city, which incorporates a sample of Faye Wong's 1993 Cantonese classic Seasonal Wind, connecting the Canadian singer R&B sound with one of Hong Kong's most recognisable musical voices.
The debut took place midway through the concert, when the title appeared across the stadium's giant screens and the lighting shifted into a neon glow.
Deep synthesizers and heavy bass introduced the brand new track, prompting an immediate reaction from the packed audience as fans began recording the performance.
'Hong Kong' music video
The performance came with a Hong Kong-exclusive music video, which was shown on the venue's LED screens.
It featured nighttime city imagery, cool blue tones and visual techniques reminiscent of director Wong Kar-wai's films.
The Weeknd in Hong Kong
The tribute also reflects The Weeknd's longstanding interest in Hong Kong's cultural identity.
Ahead of the Hong Kong concerts, he also met Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, sharing a photograph set to Wong's Dream Lover, a song featured in Wong Kar-wai's 1994 film Chungking Express.
The debut arrives during the Asian leg of the After Hours Til Dawn Tour, which has continued to generate major moments throughout the region.
On October 8, BLACKPINK's JENNIE joined The Weeknd in Seoul for the first-ever live performance of their collaboration One of the Girls, originally released in connection with HBO's The Idol.
