Nigerian chef Hilda Baci has broken a Guinness Record after cooking the world’s largest serving of jollof rice.

According to Guinness World Records, Baci got back in the spotlight after cooking the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, weighing 8,780 kilograms, to shatter the world record.

GWR confirmed the world record on social media on Monday, September 15, and wrote, “Largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice: 8,780 kg (19356 lb 9 oz) by @hildabaci and @ginonaija. Nigerian chef Hilda Baci has made her way back into the record books after kick-starting record fever across Africa.”

Baci cooked the largest serving in the world, “Jollof Wars” on Friday, September 12, in Lagos after nine hours of cooking, “passion, teamwork” and 1,200 kg of gas to serve 16,600 plates of rice to her community.

She previously told BBC, “We [Nigerians] are the giant of Africa, and jollof is a food that everybody knows Africans for. It would make sense if we had the biggest pot of jollof rice, it would be nice for the country."

The celebrity chef thanked her team and supporters after making the record and said that the triumphant moment did not just belong to her but to all of them.

She also paid tribute to the “tireless” efforts of her team in a social media post that read, “This Guinness World Record was built on unity, love, and collective strength. We made history together, for Nigeria, for Africa, and for everyone who believes in the power of food to bring us closer this win is yours too."

The world’s largest serving of jollof rice recipe included 4,000 kg of rice, 500 cartons of tomato paste, 600 kg of onions and 168 kg of goat meat that was cooked in a custom-made 23,000-litre capacity pot.

Furthermore, Baci initially gained recognition in 2021 by winning the Jollof Faceoff competition with her version, and then in 2023 she set the record for the longest cooking marathon, lasting 93 hours and 11 minutes. However, Irish chef Alan Fisher broke her record with 140 hours and 11 minutes.
