Golf legend Tiger Woods has broken his silence after being arrested for driving under the influence in Florida last week.
Following a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Woods released a statement on Tuesday announcing he will take a break from the sport.
According to police reports, Woods clipped a truck and his Land Rover flipped onto its side. While a Breathalyzer showed no alcohol in his system, deputies found prescription painkillers in his pocket.
Woods reportedly told officers he was looking at his phone and changing the radio before the crash. He has since entered a not guilty plea to the DUI charge.
In his public comments, Woods admitted, “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today.”
He confirmed he will be stepping away from competitive golf, stating, “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”
Woods explained that this move is “necessary in order for me to priorities my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”
He concluded by asking for privacy, saying, “I appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
