South Korean captain Son Heung-min has shared a lengthy and emotional apology for the team's early World Cup exit amid fans' criticism and the coach's resignation.
On Monday, June 29, Heung-min shared a sweet snap of the squad as he vowed to "run to death" for the football fans.
South Korea's World Cup run
During their World Cup 2026 journey, South Korea won their opening game in Mexico; however, they lost their next two matches, finishing third in Group A and failing to secure a spot in the knockout stage.
While a draw in their final group game would have gotten them a spot in the round of 32, the team was defeated with a 1-0 score by South Africa and finished outside the top eight third-placed teams, who advanced to the round of 32.
Did Son Heung-min play against South Africa?
The 33-year-old, who joined MLS side LA FC last August, was not part of the starting line-up for the game against South Africa.
Heung-min was brought out for the second half, but he was unable to score his 56th international goal.
"I do not know where to start. I cannot ignore it, nor do I want to hide from reality," the former Tottenham Hotspur star began his statement.
He apologised to the fans, while also sharing that the apology could not reflect the disappointment and frustration the fans felt after the game.
"I will give everything to bring you joy again. I have not forgotten the promise I made to the fans," he added. "As long as the fans still need me, I will give everything to prepare well again."
Heung-min continued, "I know very well how much was sacrificed for this stage," he said. "I feel a heavy responsibility for ultimately failing to repay the time and heart you gave us, along with your unwavering support and love."
He also urged fans to support the players instead of the harsh criticism the South Korean players are receiving.
"Lastly, I feel like asking the fans one more favor in this situation. I'm sorry and heavy, but I beg you to send warm support and encouragement rather than criticising and hurting all the players."
How did Son Heung-min's World Cup 2026 go?
Before kicking off the 2026 edition of the World Cup, Son Heung-min had three goals and one assist to his name in previous World Cup appearances.
He was tied for the most World Cup goals by a Korean player with Ahn Jung-hwan and Park Ji-sung at three each, and tied for the most combined goals and assists with Choi Soon-ho, who recorded one goal and three assists. A single goal or assist in this tournament would have given him the lead in both categories.
However, amid mounting questions over head coach Hong Myung-bo's decision to bench him, Heung-min failed to record a goal or assist in his fourth World Cup for the first time in his career.
South Korea's coach resignation
On Sunday, Hong Myung-bo resigned from his position, as he took responsibility for the disappointing tournament. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has also called for an investigation into the team's performance.
