KPop Demon Hunters star Ejae has revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio’s presence threw her off during her BAFTAs performance.
Ejae has claimed the One Battle After Another star’s presence threw her off during her BAFTAs debut, leaving her “haunted” after her voice cracked on a high note in front of Hollywood stars.
While conversing with Sunday Times STYLE magazine, Ejae said, “The BAFTAs haunt me. I made mistakes. I cracked a little bit on the high notes. Leonardo DiCaprio was [in the audience] right in front of me and he was not smiling.”
Ejae looked toward the 51-year-old star moments before singing the high note in Born to Be.
“That's what put me off. He made me so nervous,” she said.
The Golden singer shared, “It was already so nerve-racking to be in front of all these celebrities, and then I look up and lock eyes with Leonardo DiCaprio? Come on.”
Ejae said she felt less nervous at the Brit Awards, where fans and children offered heartfelt encouragement by calling out “Rumi, you got this!”
Ejae received praise from fans for pushing through despite the BAFTAs mistake.
They wrote: “Just like the movie, her voice cracked at first but ended up pulling those incredible notes; The crowd looked like they were asleep, except for a few people, it’s such a catchy song I don’t understand how you can’t enjoy it. Wait, the cracking voice is actually genius. it's like in the movie but then she overcomes it and hits the rest of notes; Love that they aren't lip syncing. We need to encourage reality and not filters.”
To note, Ejae was dropped by SM at 23 before finding success as a songwriter, with tracks like Hello and Psycho.
She later helped create KPop Demon Hunters, whose hit Golden won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
