Sunny Deol and Emraan Hashmi’s box office battle has begun!
On Friday, August 14, Indian film industry witnessed a major box-office clash as both Deol’s Batwara 1947 and Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 hit the big screen on the same day.
While the Independence Day weekend seemed like the perfect time to release a patriotic film, especially after the success of Gadar 2 and Border 2, Deol’s new film based on the India-Pakistan partition failed to attract audience as the makers seemingly did not expect Hashmi-starrer to become such a strong competitor.
According to Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 fell flat as Awarapan 2 outperformed it by 75% at the box office.
Even before its release, Batwara 1947 was behind Awarapan 2 as it earned only ₹1.76 crore in advance bookings compared with Emraan Hashmi film’s ₹8+ crore.
The trend continued on release day, as Deol-starrer struggled to attract audience despite positive reviews and praise for the actor and Shabana Azmi.
On its Day 1 in the theaters, Batwara 1947 opened at ₹5.75 crore in India, while Awarapan 2 dominated the box office with a collection of ₹21 crore.
In comparison, Border 2 grossed ₹32 crore and Gadar 2 made ₹40 crore at the time of their releases.
