The viral "Baby Shark" sensation has transformed himself into a K-pop idol with the debut of his track titled Wave.
On Thursday, August 20, the Baby Shark Boy, whose real name is Park Geonroung, released his first digital single featuring boy band Monsta X rapper Joohoney.
About the debut track 'Wave'
The tracks open with the melody of Baby Shark before it jumps into an electropop dance track with trap elements.
As per the children's content company Pinkfong, the viral boy, who appeared in the world's most-watched YouTube clip Baby Shark Dance (2016), also took part in writing the lyrics of his brand new song.
In a press release ahead of the official debut, Geonroung noted, "For me, the 'Baby Shark Dance' video is like the first wave that began 10 years ago."
He added, "I grew up within that current and now stand at a new starting point as Baby Shark Boy. I put my desire to move toward a new wave into 'WAVE,' and I hope people will see who I am now through this song."
Monsta X Joohoney breaks silence on 'Wave'
Reacting to the exciting collaboration, Joohoney said it was meaningful to work alongside an artist making his solo debut after starting out through a viral YouTube video.
"I hope the positive energy of chasing a dream reaches many people," he said. "I am rooting for Baby Shark Boy's future."
Choreography team Team Same, led by Choi Young-jun, created the performance. They reworked moves from "Baby Shark Dance" into the new track’s choreography.
Choi has worked as a choreographer for K-pop acts including BTS, Seventeen and Twice.
Troubling surrounding 'Baby Shark Dance'
In 2019, the American children's performer Johnny Only, real name Jonathan Wright, filed a copyright lawsuit in South Korea claiming Pinkfong's version had copied his 2011 recording, including its melody and the viral "doo doo doo" refrain.
The claim was dismissed by a Seoul court in 2021, which ruled that both versions were based on a long-running traditional chant and that Pinkfong had not infringed copyright.
Future plans for Baby Shark Boy
The Pinkfong Company plans to release a behind-the-scenes documentary following Baby Shark Boy's growth and the making of WAVE.
Moreover, it is also considering additional projects involving the performer, including participation in a Baby Shark film scheduled for release this winter.
