Jennifer Lawrence explains Instagram handle, reacts cheekily to viral moment

Jennifer Lawrence has finally joined Instagram after years of being on the fence about the decision.

On Wednesday, September 9, the actress left her secretly lurking on the app days behind, after screenshots of an Instagram account with the handle "jlaw" went viral.

The account does not have any posts and has almost 800K followers at the time of the writing, with 46 following.

Why Jennifer Lawrence chose 'jlaw' as her Instagram handle?

With her debut on the social media platform, she revealed that the username "Jennifer Lawrence" was already taken, cheekily addressing it in her bio, as she wrote, "jenniferlawrence was taken".

In a 2018 interview with InStyle, the Hunger Games alum revealed, "I'm on it. But I'm a voyeur: I watch, I don't speak."

She added, "There is always so much backlash. So many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything."

"I really don't want to welcome that unless it's absolutely necessary. I don't want to put myself out there for no reason. Unless I'm promoting something or something really burns my onions, you won't hear from me."

For the profile picture, Jennifer chose a pap photo of herself casually drinking something while sitting under approximately 47 pounds of hair foils.

Upon her Instagram debut, Jennifer reacted to her own viral clip from last week, when the Oscar winner accidentally said the word "facism" instead of "fashion" while presenting the winner at the 2026 LVMH Prize ceremony in Paris.

Footage of the moment racked up millions of views online, and on Wednesday night, J.Law simply wrote under the post, "Oops."

On the work front, Jennifer is set to have a cameo appearance in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel movie, due in theatres this November.
