Hollywood star Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action “God of War” series. Reports confirm that “Bautista was the perfect fit for the physically demanding role” giving the studio a lead actor who can jump straight into the action without delays.
Replacing an injured star
Bautista steps in for actor Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast in January. Production halted after Hurst suffered a torn bicep on set that required surgery and six months of physical therapy.
Rather than delaying the project into 2027, Amazon and Sony chose to recast. Show sources noted that “none of the footage from Hurst’s version will be used” and all completed scenes will be filmed from scratch.
Production back on track
Filming originally started in Vancouver in February but the studio is now gearing up for a complete reset. Studio updates confirm “prep for the show will begin again this month and production is officially set to begin mid-October.”
Bautista brings extensive physical prep from his WWE background and recent action roles, making him ready for the quick turnaround.
Adapting the PlayStation story
The two-season order directly adapts the modern Norse era of the video game franchise. Industry loglines reveal the plot centers on Kratos and his son Atreus traveling the Norse realms, where “Kratos seeks to teach his son how to become a better god, while Atreus attempts to help his father become a better human.”
