World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has officially pulled out of the upcoming US Open tournament. The 2024 champion announced on Friday that he must skip the final Grand Slam event of the year to heal an ongoing right knee injury.
The setback comes after a grueling summer forcing the Italian superstar to sit out of competitive action right before the major event in New York.
Fighting through the knee pain
Sinner has been struggling with his knee since winning his second Wimbledon title in July. The injury already forced him to miss build-up tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati earlier this month. He returned to training in Monte Carlo to test his physical condition but testing on the hard courts proved he was not ready.
Sinner released a statement explaining, “Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.”
Heartbreak for the top seed
Missing New York is a huge disappointment for Sinner, who loves playing in front of the American crowds. He shared his sorrow directly with his supporters, saying:
“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”
Focusing on full recovery
Despite the frustration, Sinner is prioritizing his long-term health to ensure he heals properly. Sinner clarified, “We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.” He aims to return strong once fully healthy.
