The Pittsburgh Pirates suffered a painful 5-4 extra-inning defeat against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Outfielder Oneil Cruz provided late-game magic in the eighth inning by hitting a clutch two-run home run. His 16th homer of the season tied the game at 4-4 and pushed the match into extra innings.
Missed opportunity in the tenth
Pittsburgh had a golden chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th inning after filling the bases with one out. However, Henry Davis grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
The team’s failure to score left them vulnerable heading into the bottom half. Manager Don Kelly expressed his frustration afterward admitting, “We have to be able find a way to score a run there.”
Edman delivers walk-off winner
The Dodgers took full advantage in the bottom of the 10th. Tommy Edman hit a line-drive single to left field off reliver Gregory Soto with two strikes, driving home the winning run.
The heartbreaking loss dealt a blow to Pittsburgh’s playoff pursuit. Reflecting on the loss, Kelly described the result as “Tough – A really tough ending.”
Chandler struggles early on the mound
Pirates starting pitcher Bubba Chandler had a difficult outing lasting only four innings while allowing four runs. He allowed a two-run homer to Max Muncy in the first inning and struggled with command throughout.
Looking back at his performance, Chandler confessed, “I tried to make the moment too big when it wasn’t.”
