King Charles and Queen Camilla are honouring the Duke of Gloucester on his special day.
Taking to the official Instagram handle of the British Royal Family on Wednesday, August 26, Buckingham Palace rolled out a heartfelt tribute for Prince Richard on the King and Queen’s behalf, marking his 82nd birthday.
In the Stories, the Royal Family posted a photo of the Duke, showing him shaking hand with someone in what appears to be some engagement.
“Happy Birthday to The Duke of Gloucester!” read the caption.
Celebrating Richard’s 82 birthday, Charles’s Royal Collection Trust also paid a loving tribute by sharing a rare throwback childhood snap of the Duke in a garden.
“Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester (cousin to Queen Elizabeth II) was born on this day in 1944. He’s pictured here as a young child, picking flowers in a garden,” read the caption.
Who is Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester?
Prince Richard, born on August 26, 1944, is a member of the British Royal Family as Prince Henry and Princess Alice’s son and the youngest grandchild of King George V.
He has held the title of The Duke of Gloucester since 1974 and is currently 33rd in the succession line.
Born fifth in the line to the British throne, Richard initially built a career as an architect before the death of his elder brother, Prince William, which changed the course of his life.
After William’s passing, he became the heir to his father’s dukedom and succeeded as the Duke of Gloucester in 1974.
On 8 July 1972, Richard married Danish-born Birgitte van Deurs Henriksen at St Andrew's Church, Barnwell, Northamptonshire.
The couple have three children: Alexander Patrick Gregers Richard Windsor, Earl of Ulster, Lady Davina Elizabeth Alice Benedikte Windsor, and Lady Rose Victoria Birgitte Louise Gilman.
