Queen Mette-Marit is set for an awkward reunion with a fellow royal whose wedding she once branded “deadly boring.”
She and Grand Duchess Stephanie are set to cross paths next week, months after Mette-Marit’s remarks about Stephanie’s wedding were revealed.
Grand Duke Guillaume and his wife are set to attend King Harald V’s state funeral at Oslo Cathedral on Wednesday, 9 September, representing Luxembourg.
Their meet up got the spotlight as documents concerning Jeffrey Epstein, declassified by the US Department of Justice in January, featured references to Queen Mette-Marit, then Crown Princess.
In 2012, Mette-Marit emailed convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while attending Guillaume and Stephanie’s wedding in Luxembourg, before the couple became Grand Duke and Duchess last year following Henri’s abdication.
The disgraced paedophile asked Mette-Marit, "Weather was too bad, I returned to NY..how was your wedding?"
Mette-Marit replied from a redacted email address using the name “HKH Kronprinsessan,” writing, "I'm dying of boredom. Come save us."
She went on to complain that the ceremony was “deadly boring,” describing the venue as “a place full of old people” and comparing it to “some kind of old movie.”
The royal’s name appeared in several Epstein files detailing email exchanges with the convicted sex offender, who died at New York City’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in 2019.
Queen Mette-Marit's public apology
After the files were released, Mette-Marit issued a public apology, saying: "I would like to express my deepest regret for my friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. It is important that I apologise to all of you for letting you down.”
She added, "Some messages between Epstein and me do not represent the person I want to be. I also apologize for the situation I have put the Royal Family in, especially the King and Queen."
Speaking tearfully to NRK in March, she said she felt “manipulated and deceived,” adding that she regretted ever meeting Epstein.
