Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi could be set to play together on the same team for the first time ever.
According to The Sun, the pair have battled it out over the past two decades as the most dominant stars of their generation.
They have developed a legendary rivalry, facing off against each other on 37 occasions for club and country.
But now reports out of Argentina claim that the pair could finally be set to play alongside each other, under surprising circumstances.
The stars could be reunited for the farewell match of their former team-mate Carlos Tevez.
The 42-year-old retired in 2021 while playing for Boca Juniors, his boyhood club with whom he started his career.
However, TYC Sports claim that Tevez has arranged to loan the side’s 57,000-capacity La Bombonera stadium to host a farewell match to bookend his relationship with the club.
A star-studded gala is planned at the legendary La Bombonera. Around 60 high-profile footballers are expected, including, if possible, Messi and Ronaldo. "We will bring them together," Tevez announced on the streaming service Olga.
A provisional date for some time in December has been targeted for the fixture, with Tevez having ambitious plans to create a memorable clash of some of the sport’s biggest names.
Tevez hopes to field a starting XI comprising his closest friends from both his professional and personal lives.
While the opposition would feature players that he teamed up with at various points in his career.
Notably, Tevez featured for Argentina alongside Messi, and played for two seasons at Manchester United with Ronaldo.
Despite their age, both are still playing. Messi, now 39 years old, is still with Inter Miami in MLS and won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022. Only recently, he announced his retirement from the national team.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia and chasing a historic milestone: the Portuguese wants to become the first player ever to reach 1,000 career goals. At the same time, he indicated that the current season could possibly be his last.
