WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has announced she will step down at the end of December 2026, closing out a transformative seven-year tenure as the league’s top executive.
Appointed in 2019 as the WNBA’s first official commissioner, Engelbert steered the sport through an era of exponential financial expansion. Under her leadership, the league secured a landmark $3.1 billion media rights agreement, instituted full-team charter flight programs and executed growth plans aimed at expanding the league to 18 franchises by 2030.
She also oversaw a historic collective bargaining deal that introduced the league’s first million-dollar player salary opportunities.
Navigating high-stakes friction and league challenges
Despite driving historic financial progress, Engelbert’s time in office was also marked by notable tensions.
Contentious collective bargaining negotiations, player concerns regarding online abuse, ongoing debate surrounding officiating and broader public discourse over league policies created recurring friction points between front-office leadership and player representatives.
Preparing for a smooth leadership transition
Addressing her planned departure, Engelbert confirmed that the decision to retire was entirely her own noting her original goal was to serve for a shorter period before spending more time with family.
A formal succession planning process is already underway evaluating both internal and external candidates to identify the league’s next leader.
Engelbert will remain in her role through the end of the year to assist the NBA and WNBA Board of Governors in facilitating a seamless transition into the league’s next chapter.
