Sydney Sweeney and advertisements might not be the best combination, as the actress continued to receive intense backlash over her Novig ad.
What was in Sydney Sweeney's ad for Novig?
In the campaign for US sports-prediction market, Sydney could be seen with nothing but sports equipment, sparking anger and frustration among netizens and athletes alike.
In a series of photos and videos released last week, Sydney could be seen naked holding American footballs, a tennis racket and a ball, and lying on a basketball.
Felicity Palmateer says Sydney Sweeney is 'damaging' sports
Talking to CNN, Australian surfer Felicity Palmateer said that the Novig advertising campaign is "very damaging" for female athletes and young girls looking to get into sport.
Felicity noted that the "hypersexualised" ad left her in "utter disbelief", adding, "Incredibly disappointing, like, how far you can put women's sports backwards in the space of a 42-second commercial."
Amy Hunt calls out the 'Euphoria' actress
British sprinter Amy Hunt also called out the ad campaign in a post-race interview on Sunday.
"Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport look like," Hunt told BBC Sport. "Muscles. Hard work. Sweat, blood, tears."
Australian swimmer Lani Pallister also shared her disappointment in the ad, as she posted a compilation video of her training and competing, with text that read, "Don't know what Sydney thinks sport looks like, but THIS is what sport looks like."
Australian, boxer Skye Nicholson, posted a similar video in response to the ad.
"Giving the ad campaign exactly what they wanted, but honestly these companies need to do better. Stop sexualising women in #sport," read the caption.
Sydney Sweeney reacts to the Novig ad backlash?
In a subtle move, Sydney Sweeney appeared to respond to the backlash on Sunday by posting a series of photos from ESPN The Magazine's annual "Body Issue".
The yearly edition featured dozens of athletes either naked or semi-nude during an 11-year run that came to an end in 2019.
This is not the first time the actress has found herself in hot water due to advertisement.
Last year, Sydney featured in an American Eagle denim campaign, which made her a target after the ad tagline went viral, noting, "Sydney Sweeney as great genes," with netizens claiming that the ad promoted eugenics and racism.
