Nick Reiner is facing murder charges in connection with the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
DA rules out death penalty for Nick Reiner
In the latest development, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said that Nick will not face the death penalty if convicted of the killing of his parents.
On Tuesday, September 15, at a press conference, Nathan said that the death penalty was taken off the table after consultation with the victims' children and Nick's siblings.
The DA said that the decision was made after a "rigorous review", which he described as "careful and thorough".
He added, "The brutal murders of Michele and Rob Reiner are ones that will never leave us. We believe we have that murderer right now in custody."

The maximum sentence Nick will face is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Nick was indicted by a grand jury on murder charges, as well as a special circumstance of lying in wait, in addition to the use of a knife.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being represented by a public defender.
Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner's death circumstances
The charges are related to the stabbing deaths of Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, who were found unresponsive in their Brentwood home in the early morning hours of Dec. 14, 2025.
Their bodies were discovered after a massage therapist came to the Reiner family home for a scheduled appointment.
When no on answered the door, the therapist contacted the pair's daughter and Brentwood neighbour, Romy Reiner.
The daughter then came to her parents' house to find her father's bloodied body.
Nick was arrested hours later near the campus of the University of Southern California and has been held without bail since.
"This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing," Nathan said in a previous statement.
Nick Reiner seeking his trust
Notably, Tuesday's hearing was unrelated to an ongoing legal battle over California's "slayer statute" that could deny Nick the funds for his defence.
The law bars someone who intentionally kills the creator of a trust from receiving assets from that person.
Nick is seeking access to his trust before his criminal case is resolved. The issue is expected to be addressed at a separate hearing on October 23.
