Charles Spencer has broken his silence on Buckingham Palace’s scathing statement.
In an explosive new interview with the BBC on Friday, September 18, the 9th Earl Spencer lashed out at King Charles as he doubled down his claim against the monarch about Princess Diana’s death.
While speaking to interviewer Laura Kuenssberg, Earl Spencer, who is gearing up to publish a bombshell memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, based on the former Princess of Wales, took an aim at his ex-brother-in-law and Buckingham Palace by stating that, “I’m telling the truth.”
“He went ballistic, would be the right term, and started really going for my family as a whole about their sense of duty not being adequate enough and ranted for a while. I have no idea how long, but it was a significant period and I just listened,” Princess Diana’s brother recalled.
He continued, “And then he stopped and I thought, ‘Oh now he's going to pull himself together and say something more appropriate.’ And then he said, ‘We'll forget her soon enough.”
When Laura asked what went through his mind upon hearing those words, Spencer said, “Well, I'm not sure I can say exactly what went through my mind, but I really was so stunned, and I just after a stunned silence. I said. I cannot believe you just said that, and I hung up on him.”
The host then read out Buckingham Palace’s response on the claim, which stated, “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss."
Laura then stated, “The King is plainly furious,” to which Earl Spencer immediately questioned, “Is he furious or is he embarrassed.”
Spencer them stressed that “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough,” were the exact words that Charles III said to him, emphasizing that his recollection can never be wrong as he has only spoken to the monarch over the phone just twice.
The interviewer then asked him who should the public to believe to be telling the truth: King Charles, who is the head of state, or him, to which Spencer affirmed, “Well, I’m telling the truth.”
Charles Spencer’s new memoir is set to be released on September 22, 2026.
