Hollywood actor Glen Powell has revealed a frightening health scare that occurred while filming The Running Man.
A stunt involving a prop knife caused a serious hand injury, prompting chaos as it led to an emergency hospital visit, warnings and surgery that he could lose his hand.
Here are some specific details about the incident.
1. A stunt went wrong on set
The Chad Powers alum met with an unfortunate incident while shooting for an intense fight scene for the 2025 action thriller.
Although the production used a retractable prop knife, the impact caused tendon rupture in his hand.
2. He initially underestimated the injury
The Scream Queens star was unable to recognise the gravity of damage. With filming deadlines approaching and another movie lined up, he remained focused on his work instead of taking a break from work to seek medical attention.
3. The injury developed into a septic infection
Following some time, Glen Powell started experiencing some pain in hand, and gradually developed swelling.
Powell went to an emergency room in Bulgaria, where the film was being shot. Doctors found that the tissue damage would have caused septic infection.
4. Doctors warned he could lose his hand
Powell required emergency surgery. Before the procedure, doctors warned him about the possibility of waking up without his hand, highlighting the severity of the injury. Fortunately, the operation remained successful.
5. He returned to filming the next day
Despite medical advice to keep the injury dry, warm and rested, Glen Powell returned to the set the following day.
The production incorporated bandages into his character’s storyline. He even filmed a climbing sequence in freezing temperatures while relying on one arm.
Reflecting on the experience, Powell stated the demanding production left him physically and emotionally exhausted.
Moreover, his account has also prompted him to reconsider his work commitments and the importance of setting healthier boundaries.
