Zoya Akhtar has thrilled fans with an exciting update.
During her interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India at the Monsoon Film Festival, the 53-year-old Indian filmmaker announced that she is working on the sequel to the hit 2011 film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, sparking anticipation among fans.
The director told that she was planning to unveil the news once it “feels correct,” however, after receiving massive backlash and being verbally “abused” by fans, she was forced to announce the much-anticipated movie.
“We are on it. We don’t know what will happen and what won’t if we will get to a place where it feels correct, in catching up with these characters today. But it will be nice. When it happens, I’ll announce it,” she said.
Speculation about the second installment sparked when the trio – Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deo – who originally starred in the movie reunited for a tourism campaign and sparked nostalgia, prompting fans to believe that an official announcement was on the way.
Some even thought that the ad might be the trailer for the upcoming sequel, leaving them disappointed.
The disappointed led to massive backlash against Zoya Akhtar, who revealed that she “got abused” by fans in her DMs.
“People thought it was a trailer. First, they were like, ‘YEAH!’ but then I got abused in my DMs saying, ‘This was not funny,’” she shared.

In 2025, Farhan Akhtar, who produced Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and also played one of the main characters in it, expressed hopes for the franchise to be renewed.
"People have been asking me questions about ZNMD 2 since 2011. This question has never left me. ZNMD was a fun ride, working with Abhay, Hrithik, Katrina and Kalki, shooting in Spain,” he stated.
The Bhaag Milkha Bhaag star added, “The weather was great, the locations were outstanding. The crew was fun. If I had to repeat any film experience, in a heartbeat I would choose Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. I hope Zoya does ZNMD 2.”
Hrithik Roshan also expressed optimism about the sequel during an event in Atlanta, saying, “My instincts are telling me it will happen. I don’t know when, but it will.”
