Two members of the Milligan University cycling team were killed on Wednesday morning during a team training ride in rural eastern Tennessee.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. along Highway 19E in Carter County when a passenger vehicle collided with the group of 11 riders.
Victims identified
University officials confirmed the deaths of sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers. Seven other cyclists were injured and rushed to Johnson City Medical Center with some airlifted due to severe injuries.
University leaders shared their heartbreak, stating, “There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss. Our prayers are with those impacted by this tragedy.”
Condition of injured cyclists
Hospital officials provided medical updates during a press conference following the tragedy. Dr. Bracken Burns reported that of the seven hospitalized athletes, “four were in critical condition, two were in stable condition and the seventh was evaluated and released.”
District Attorney General Steven Finney emphasized the experience of the athletes, noting, “This is an elite cycling team, it’s not a bunch of club guys getting together to ride, they know what they’re doing.”
Ongoing investigation
State law enforcement authorities confirmed that a driver involved in the crash has been taken into custody as the Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate the scene.
Neighbouring universities and community members have offered widespread support and condolences as the campus mourns the loss.
