Prince Albert II has sent his heartfelt condolences to King Haakon following the death of his father, King Harald V, honoring the late monarch’s decades of service and lasting legacy.
Monaco’s royal family shared a somber message honoring King Harald V’s legacy in an emotional letter to his son, King Haakon.
Norway's monarch passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, August 28, at around 06:35 local time at the national hospital in Oslo.
Addressed to "His Majesty King Haakon VIII", the official letter reads, “It is with deep sadness that Princess Charlene and I learned of the passing of Your Father, His Majesty King Harald V.”
It added, “Throughout his reign, King Harald devoted himself to the service of the Kingdom of Norway and its people. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, marked by His humanity, commitment and sense of duty, as well as the respect and affection of all who had the privilege of knowing Him.”
The letter said, “We will remember with great esteem His commitment to protecting the environment, as well as His dedication to the Olympic values of sport, inclusion, cultural diversity and respect for human rights. These causes reflected His profound humanity and will remain an important part of His legacy. I remember with emotion the wonderful moments that we all shared together.”
“My family and the people of Monaco join Princess Charlene and me in sending you and your family our most sincere condolences and compassion in the face of this enormous loss,” it stated.
Prince Albert added, “We are convinced that Your Majesty, strengthened by so many years devoted to serving Norway, will be able to continue your father’s work with the same dignity and dedication.”
King Harald was born on February 21, 1937, and became monarch in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav.
