A South Los Angeles couple recently welcomed three newborn boys in an extraordinary birth that nearly broke international records. Mom Nyla Craft gave birth to Elio, Elias and Enzo, who arrived with a massive combined weight of 19.3 pounds.
A near record-setting birth weight
The delivery made headlines because triplets typically weigh around 3.5 pounds each. Craft’s set delivered a rare “mixed” combination consisting of two identical twins and one fraternal sibling.
Each of the three baby boys tipped the scales at over 6 pounds. The total weight put the family just a few ounces short of the world record for the heaviest triplet birth.
Shared tears of relief and birthday joy
Adding to the special occasion, all three noys were delivered on their father Marco Bernal’s birthday. Craft opened up about the emotional moment she first heard her boys in the delivery room, recalling:
“When I heard the first baby come out, I cried because I was just, ‘oh my gosh, he’s okay,’ then the second one then the third one and I was just like, I heard them all crying at once and I was like, ‘oh thank God, they are good.’”
Celebrating a healthy family of seven
The healthy trio has been safely transitioned home expanding the couple’s household to five children under the age of five.
Expressing his excitement during a home visit, Dr. Rohit Passi, chief of neonatology at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center, stated, “We’re just so happy, this is the best part, seeing them out and sitting with the family and this is the reason we do what we do.”
