Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called to slow down the speed of artificial intelligence development, issuing a warning that the technology’s risks are becoming increasingly serious.
In an essay published Saturday, Amodei stated AI development should continue; however, he argued that companies and governments need more time to make the systems more advanced.
He proposed independent monitoring, industry-wide standards and global regulation.
Increasing AI safety concerns
Amodei’s warning comes amid raising concerns regarding AI systems becoming more capable and difficult to control.
Previously, Anthropic stated it disrupted attempts to misuse its models for possibly dangerous activities.
Recently, two employees from the Claude AI manufacturer resigned, issuing a warning regarding the risks posed by the race to develop increasingly powerful AI.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman separately told Fortune that AI safety standards were not yet strong enough to support pushing capabilities much further.
Additionally, he stated AI beyond human control was “absolutely” possible.
Amodei calls for controlled progress
Amodei stated Anthropic would commit to developing AI at a “balanced rate” while considering some
"I believe that if slowing down bought us even an extra year or two before models reach critical levels of capability, and we used that time to advance alignment, we could greatly reduce the risk that something goes seriously wrong," Amodei stated.
Elon Musk backed Amodei’s position, stating the Anthropic CEO was “right”. Others, however, accused Amodei of using safety concerns to strengthen Anthropic’s control over AI technology.
The debate comes as Anthropic and OpenAI are reportedly developing a record-setting initial public offerings, intensifying competition in the race of AI.
