A severe network disruption at Google Cloud’s primary London data center has triggered widespread digital banking outages across the United Kingdom and Europe.
The technical failure which began early Tuesday morning in the “europe-west2” region, caused elevated error rates and intermittent connectivity loss across critical online platforms.
Revolut and top lenders hit hard
Popular digital bank Revolut suffered severe impacts with millions of users reporting failed app logins, declined card transactions, halted bank transfers and blocked ATM withdrawals. A Revolut source confirmed the incident stemmed directly from the Google Cloud outage.
Other major UK financial institutions – including HSBC and Lloyds Banking Group – also experienced intermittent issues with their digital and web services, alongside delivery and property platforms like Royal Mail and Rightmove.
Funds safe as engineers investigate
Revolut swiftly reassured customers that all account balances and personal data remain completely safe despite ongoing technical difficulties. “We have been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologize to anyone affected for any inconvenience caused,” the neobank stated in an official release.
Google Cloud’s engineering team confirmed they are actively investigating the root cause of the London data center failure, recommending affected enterprise clients temporarily migrate workloads to alternative cloud regions where feasible.
Highlighting cloud dependency risks
The sudden widespread crash underscores the growing vulnerability of the modern financial system. As top institutions increasingly rely on centralized cloud giants like Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and AWS, a single localized server failure can instantly stall daily commerce for millions of consumers.
