In a landmark decision for global athletics, Nairobi has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
Announced by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe following a Council meeting in Budapest, the selection marks the very first time the flagship track and field event will be held on the African continent.
Overcoming tough global competition
The Kenyan capital secured the bid after competing against major candidate cities including London, Rome and Munich. While Munich missed out of 2029, the German city was selected to host the subsequent edition in 2031.
World Athletics highlighted Nairobi’s “compelling and emotional bid,” built on Kenya’s rich distance-running legacy and deep fan engagement.
Proven hosting track record
Nairobi’s victory follows a previous bid for the 2025 event which was awarded to Tokyo.
Undeterred, Kenyan organizers returned with a stronger proposition backed by successful experiences hosting the 2017 World U18 and 2021 World U20 Championships.
The decision recognizes Africa’s central role in generating world-class athletics talent.
Upgraded venues and infrastructure
Events will take place at the iconic Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. The multi-purpose venue is undergoing extensive structural modernizations to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, ensuring state-of-the-art facilities will be ready for the world’s best track and field athletes come September 2029.
