Russell Brand’s trial has begun in London, marking a significant development in the legal proceedings against the comedian and actor.

The 51-year-old comedian and actor has been charged with three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault, relating to alleged offences in London and Bournemouth from 1999 to 2009.

On Monday at London's Southwark Crown Court, the process of jury selection began.

Brand denies all the charges.

He appeared at court wearing a grey suit and sunglasses, with his wife Laura by his side.

Numerous media representatives were present, with proceedings expected to get underway on Wednesday.

There are six female complainants in the case.

During the selection process, potential jurors were asked a number of questions by the judge, Mr Justice Bennathan.

"Many of you will have heard of him", the judge said, adding that Brand had been on television "a great deal a couple of years ago.

The judge said: "About three years ago there was a television programme and a long article in the Times newspaper in which some allegations were made against him of sexual misconduct. They were allegations he firmly denied."

Six potential jurors raised their hands when asked if they had watched the Channel 4 documentary or read the article.

The judge said proceedings could run for six weeks, although jurors might have to remain available until December 11.

The pool was reduced to 20 potential jurors, with a smaller group due to be selected and sworn in on Tuesday before being sent home.

Judge Bennathan warned them not to research Brand.
