Karan Johar, who launched three versatile actors Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan into Bollywood with 2012’s hit film Student of the Year explained the reason of not directing the web-series.

During his conversation at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF), Karan spilled new and exciting details on Student of the Year’s digital version, confirming that Reema Maya will be directing the coming-of-age series.

“Reema Maya will be directing the digital version of Student of the Year. But it will be her way and definitely not mine because if I’ll enter Reema Maya’s world, then I will make it more of an illusion, which is what her name means,” said the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director.

He added, “I just wanted it to be her voice. She made it her own series.”

According to a report from Harper's Bazaar last year, it was announced that Shanaya Kapoor would be the main star in the third edition of Student of the Year.

Shanaya Kapoor was initially slated to make her debut in Dharma Productions' Bedhadak alongside Laksh Lalwani and Gurfateh Pirzada, however the film have been canceled.

Later, she was scheduled to debut in the Malayalam film Vrushabha alongside Mohanlal, but unfortunately, that project was also shelved.

Reema, who is all set to direct the Student of the Year is the co-founder of the production house, Catnip and an international award-winning writer-director.

Her short film Counterfeit Kunkoo received good response at Sundance Film Festival in 2018.

Reema’s most recent film Nocturnal Burger was also premiered at the 2023’s festival.

To note, the official announcement about the Students of the Year web series and its cast is yet to be made by the filmmakers.
