Want to live longer? Choose stairs over lift: Study
Scientists found taking stairs instead of a lift helps to live longer

Scientists have discovered that choosing the stairs instead of using the lift could increase life span.

As per The Standard, scientists have said that climbing stairs instead of using the lift is associated with better heart health and longer life.

Findings presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s Preventive Cardiology conference in Athens, Greece, suggested taking stairs regularly could reduce the 24% risk of dying from any disease.

Furthermore, the risk of dying from heart disease also lowered to 39%.

New research indicates that even the shortest type of activity, like climbing stairs, could cut the risk of premature death.

Dr Sophie Paddock of Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust confirmed, “If you have the choice of taking the stairs or the lift, go for the stairs as it will help your heart.”

She furthered, “Even brief bursts of physical activity have beneficial health impacts, and short bouts of stair climbing should be an achievable target to integrate into daily routines.”

Paddock said, “Our study suggested that the more stairs climbed, the greater the benefits, but this needs to be confirmed. So, whether at work, home or elsewhere, take the stairs.”

Moreover, according to a report compiled by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, physical inactivity is the reason behind one in six deaths in the UK.
