Around 45 people died in the deadly landslide in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Wednesday, July 30.

According to BBC, heavy rain triggered a massive and deadly landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad district. Dozens of people feared being trapped after a landslide struck the hilly areas of the district.

State Health Minister Veena George said over 70 people were injured in the deadly landslide, and around 101 have been rescued till now.

Press Secretary to the Kerala Chief Minister, PM Manoj, told CNN that the national and state disaster rescue force and the Kerala fire services are doing rescue operations in Wayanad.

A local resident, Raghavan C. Arunamala, described the horrifying scene, saying, “I saw a man trapped in the debris shouting for help. Firefighters and rescue workers have been trying to reach him for the last few hours. We fear hundreds of people are trapped inside the villages.”

Moreover, neighboring areas of the Wayanad district are also on high alert due to the heavy rain forecast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones, and prayers are with those injured. Rescue operations are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM Shri @pinarayivijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there.”
