Researchers have warned people that their bedtime routine could have a significant impact on their heart health.

According to ChronicleLive, experts have cautioned that irregular sleeping habits increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and even eight hours of sleep cannot save you from this threat.

A senior author of the study, Jean-Philippe Chaput, emphasised, “We should aim to wake up and go to sleep within 30 minutes of the same time each night and each morning, including weekends. Within an hour of the same time is good but less good than 30 minutes, and even better is to have zero variation."

“Beyond an hour's difference, each night and each morning means irregular sleep. That can have negative health impacts. The closer you are to zero variation, the better,” he continued.

For this study, the researchers analysed data from over 72,000 UK Biobank participants whose Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) Score was determined by the trackers.

The results of the study showed that people with irregular sleeping patterns have a 25% higher chance of suffering a stroke or heart attack as compared to people with regular sleep habits.

The study also suggested that “sleep regularity” is more important than sufficient sleep duration “in modulating major adverse cardiovascular event risk."
